QUEEN DVDs (and laserdiscs!)

I was a huge DVD collector about 2 years before I even got back into collecting Queen stuff again, so naturally when the two worlds collide, I'll basically buy anything on DVD with the name 'Queen' on it. That means I have some rather bad unofficial items in this list, but I like to think of myself as the one who's watching out for what's good and what's not, for other fans. Sorry the info isn't consistent for all DVDs. Hopefully someday it will be. And please note that I have an annoying habit of putting stuff in the order of its first production, chronologically, rather than by when the DVD was released. For example the karaoke stuff goes under 1996 since that's when the Japanese laserdisc first appeared. So take another look if you think I'm missing something.. it's there somewhere :)

VCD:

Greatest Flix III Greatest Flix III (1999) (1999 Malaysian version) (Toshiba EMI 7243 4 92301 25)
I'd prefer the laserdisc but it's a bit hard to find at the moment, so this will do in the meantime. Quality is better than I expected. Professional VCDs tend to look much nicer than consumer ones ;) Note: the booklet cover states 'Greatest Hits III' instead of 'Flix' but it appears as 'Flix' everywhere else. This is most likely the only Queen VCD I'll ever buy so I stuck it here with the DVDs (and LDs).

Laserdisc:

Live In Rio Live In Rio (1985) (1998 Japanese version) (Toshiba EMI TOLW-3275)
Includes obi and lyric insert. I had the U.S. version years ago. In addition to the slightly different cover, this one is also single-sided. 60 mins. exactly.

The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert (1992) (1993 Hollywood Records/Image Entertainment 1780 AS)
The original 175 minute laserdisc set I owned back when it came out, recently acquired again new and SEALED! This version is still incomplete, but contains roughly 70 minutes more than the DVD version they put out, including performances by Metallica, Extreme, Def Leppard (with Brian) and Guns N' Roses. Of the actual concert only one extra song is featured on the DVD - Zucchero with 'Las Palabras De Amor'. I LOVE having this again. Finding it truly made me feel I've gotten back to something I lost many years ago. 10 years actually since I had a laserdisc player.

We Will Rock You - Special Edition We Will Rock You (1981/2001) (Special Edition) (Pioneer Artists PA-11555) (Review)

We Will Rock You - Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid Edition We Will Rock You - Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid Edition (1981/1984/1985/1997/2001/2004/2007) (Eagle Vision EV 30228-9)
Visually it's the worst DVD version so far. The 2001 version was flawless, perfect, clear, perfectly color graded. This one has been run through a filter (as stated on Brian's site) which results in a flat, overly-smooth, unlife-like visual mess. The colors are often way off, overdone... ugh.. I can't complain enough about this transfer. It's bloody awful. As for the "new" surround mix, it's unexciting as many live shows are. Oh and, it's 4.1 with no center channel. The 2001 version was vibrant and exciting, raw and real and used all 5.1 channels! Imagine that!. This one is frequently all-front with just some synth effects, echo and crowd noise mixed to the rear. Quite a disappointment. The commentary is so-so. The boys sound tired and totally not into it most of the time. Haha, I really don't have much nice to say about this. The Live Aid footage is no better than the previous DVD version and is still missing the humorous intro (I thought they'd at least find and restore that! Nope!). The Live Aid rehearsal/interview finally solves the mystery of where some documentary footage originated, which is frequently used (silently) in unofficial documentary DVDs. Nice to have that with sound now, I guess. The PM Magazine bit is poor quality, short and features the tiniest little interview snippets. I can't recommend this except to say if you can find it super-cheap as I did (11.99) pick it up just to have something "new" to buy. If you've avoided the show previously, get the 2001 version before it's long gone!

Freddie Mercury - The Video Collection Freddie Mercury - The Video Collection (2000) (Hollywood HR-690089)
PAL version is also owned in the Freddie Mercury Solo Collection, along with The Untold Story documentary.

Greatest Video Hits 1 Greatest Video Hits 1 (2002) (Hollywood 2061-69011-9)
Quite disappointing in terms of video presentation. Full-frame videos are cropped to fake widescreen, quality ranges from hideous to passable. On the plus side, it's worth buying just for the bonus materials.. commentary, interviews, etc.

Greatest Video Hits 2 Greatest Video Hits 2 (2003) (Hollywood 2061-69017-9)
Quite disappointing in terms of video presentation. Full-frame videos are cropped to fake widescreen, quality ranges from passable to good. Even worse, they completely botched the ratios for 'A Kind Of Magic' (squeezed) and 'Hammer To Fall' (stretched). On the plus side, it's worth buying just for the bonus materials.. commentary, interviews, etc.

Jewels Jewels (2004) (Toshiba-EMI TOBW-3165) video demo
Nice little video collection released in Japan only. Includes a few not included on the 'Greatest Video Hits' collections, including "I Was Born To Love You" which was specially made for the DVD. Region 2 enforced.

Return Of The Champions Return Of The Champions (2005) (Hollywood 2061-62527-9)
This concert rocks!.

The Making of A Night at the Opera The Making of A Night at the Opera (2006) (Eagle Rock EV 30161-9)
Excellent documentary as seen on UK television, plus additional footage not used totalling about 100 minutes of Queen documentary bliss.

Super Live In Japan Super Live In Japan (2006) (Toshiba-EMI TOBW-3296)
Fantastic Queen + Paul Rodgers show from Japan. Only released in Japan, but the disc is region free and NTSC of course. A much better show than 'Return of the Champions' in my opinion and includes a 2nd disc with a 25 minute documentary. Well worth importing :)

Freddie Mercury - Lover Of Life Singer Of Songs Freddie Mercury - Lover Of Life Singer Of Songs (2006) (EMI-Parlophone 00946 3 67170 9 8)
2-DVD set with updated versions of The Untold Story and The Video Collection. UK version.

Other Queen-related Official DVDs:

Live Aid LIve Aid (1985/2004) (Warner R2 970383)
Queen stole the show in this historic event. Their complete 21 minute set (except for their humorous introduction), as well as Freddie & Brian's "Is This The World We Created" are included.

Iron Eagle Iron Eagle (1986) (Columbia TriStar 83969)
Okay, so it's a stretch to consider this a Queen item, but 'One Vision' is featured three times so what the hell :) Not a great DVD but it was cheap and I enjoy the film.

Highlander - The Immortal Edition Highlander - Immortal Edition (1986/2002) (Anchor Bay DV11723)
This special edition set is really geared towards the Queen fan. Includes the music videos for Princes Of The Universe, A Kind Of Magic and Who Wants To Live Forever, a Queen photo gallery and a special Queen CD companion disc with 3 tracks.

46664 The Event 46664 The Event (2003/2004) (Warner R2 970312)
2 DVD set featuring Brian & Roger performing as Queen on several tracks.
